The fascinating history of

païssa d’en bernat

A Paissa, or more commonly known in Ibiza as “sa Païssa” , was a temporary accommodation for communities of farmers during planting time. These constructions provided shelter for the farmers and their livestock and also acted as a warehouse, mainly for people who had orchards and grazing land far from their usual homes. Paissa’s are mainly found in the San Jose area of Ibiza.

Originally the land produced almonds, wheat, carobs, and vines. Then, early last century the villa became the permanent residence of the Bernat family (hence Païssa den, or, of Bernat) The construction was used for scholarships where boys from the local vicinity would learn reading and mathematics.

In 2008 the current owners, Lynda Harras and Enrique Rey de Viñas completely refurbished the property. Today Sa Païssa d’en Bernat is characterised by a unique mix of styles and influences.

The foundations were laid over the originals and are particular to Mediterranean architecture with Spanish/Toledo influences, such as thick walls, high ceilings and fireplaces all typical to central Spain. Traditional Ibizan touches have also been preserved with an original bread oven and lots of other details all lovingly restored.

what to expect of paissa d’en bernat today

We want to give all our guests a taste of this interesting blend of past and present. In Ibiza there are only a handful of these buildings left in good condition, so we’re very proud to open our doors so you too can experience this local traditional piece of history.

Paissa den Bernat is a true hidden gem and enjoys an exclusive and secluded location. It extends over 15 hectares which is equivalent to 37 football pitches! We’re perched up high, close to the white sandy beaches and clear blue sea, but we still enjoy complete intimacy in unspoiled nature.

Today’s guests will find a traditional yet modern five bedroom Ibiza villa with interiors influenced by Balinese design. Our suites come with four-poster beds, grand wooden tables and intricately carved furniture, most of which were handmade by Balinese artisans using recycled boat-woods. When stepping onto the outside terraces, the style continues with two chill-out Gazebo beds, romantic wooden swings, and the black-stone fountain… This combined with the singing of the birds and rustling of the breeze in the trees are what will greet you when you arrive.

In the evenings, you and your guests will enjoy beautiful panoramic views as this Ibiza villa has one of the island’s most sought-after locations to take in the legendary sunset.

You’re invited to come and relax at Paissa, enjoy its large open spaces, colourful gardens, chill-out areas around the pool and terraces with Balinese gazebos. Feel free to explore the surroundings and take a stroll to the beach down the peaceful, private walkway.

KIND WORDS

Huge thank you to you and your team for making our wedding day so perfect after having to wait so long! After having postponed twice, we felt so supported and we really felt like you took the stress away from us. All our guests absolutely loved it and kept saying how beautiful it was there and how good the food and service were and how friendly and helpful all the staff were!

The villa itself is so beautiful, spacious, clean and homely. We really did have the best time and are already thinking about planning a holiday back at the villa, we miss it so much!

Hello Cris and your amazing team,

Now that the dust has settled and we are slowly getting back to normal life, we would just like to thank you all for such an amazing wedding day and all the support before & during the wedding day.

All of our guests could not speak highly enough of your venue, catering and your staff were an absolute credit to you Cris. 5 stars all round!

We would highly recommend any future couple’s thinking about Paissa just to book it up, it’s as simple as that!

Hopefully one day we will return to visit you for a holiday with some family/friends :>

“Gracias desde el fondo de nuestros corazones” (Hope that worked okay haha)

We will be forever grateful to you and your family/team.

All our love,

Scott & Chez – 2021

Paissa d’en Bernat is the perfect place for a group holiday/ family holiday/ wedding. We got married here in May 2018 and stayed at the villa for 6 days. We had an absolutely perfect time and we found nothing to complain about. The villa is stunning with a rustic charm and homely feel. It was spacious, clean and cool inside. We loved waking up in the morning to the peaceful surroundings and enjoying the lovely view. BBQ’s on the terrace area with our family and friends at sunset are our favourite memories. Our wedding was made so much more special by being able to relax and enjoy the villa before and after our wedding. We hope to be back again one day and relive the memories of the best time of our lives. Thank you Cristina and team.
