The fascinating history of
païssa den bernat
In Ibiza, a Païssa, commonly known as “sa Païssa”, originally served as temporary accommodation for farming communities during planting seasons. These structures provided shelter for farmers and their livestock, doubling as storage facilities for orchard produce and grazing supplies. Predominantly found in the San Jose area of Ibiza, Païssas reflect the island’s agricultural heritage.
The estate’s history dates back to the early 20th century when it became the permanent residence of the Bernat family, giving rise to its current name, Païssa d’en Bernat. It also served as a centre for local education, offering scholarships where boys from nearby communities studied reading and mathematics.
In 2008, the property underwent a comprehensive renovation by its current owners, Lynda Harras and Enrique Rey de Viñas. Today, Païssa d’en Bernat harmoniously blends Mediterranean architecture with Spanish influences, featuring thick walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces typical of central Spain. The restoration preserved traditional Ibiza elements, including an original bread oven, showcasing meticulous attention to detail.
